“Favela é Moda” reveals the aesthetic and politcal strength of young black people from the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro in search of personal fulfillment in the fashion world. The feature documentary presents us with a generation that believes in the affirmation of identities and sexualities, following the development of models by an agency in the Jacarezinho favela that tries to reverse the scenario of under-representation of black bodies. Based on the concept of ‘Fashion Resistance’, they reflect on the aesthetic standard in the fashion marketin Brazil and discuss themes such as representation, racism, youth and identity.

About the director:

Emílio Domingos is a filmmaker, researcher and screenwriter. Master in Culture and Territorialities and Anthropologist, his area of ​​research and interest is contemporary culture, youth, blackness and periphery. Director of the feature films ‘Favela É Moda’ (2020), ‘Deixa na Régua’ (2016), ‘A Batalha do Passinho’ (2013), and ‘L.A.P.A.’ (2008), who participated in festivals and received national and international awards. General director of the series ‘O Enigma da Energia Escura’, produced by Lab Phantom. Curator of the Festival Visões Periféricas, the International Ethnographic Film Festival and the Documenta-se Cineclube.
