Chicago’s Brazilian Film Festival MOSTRA celebrates diversity

The 13th edition of the largest Brazilian movie festival of the Midwest kicks off on November 2. Screenings at universities across Illinois are free of charge. They will also be accessible for virtual screenings.

Chicago, IL (10/20/2022) — The most expected event of the year for Chicagoan fans of Brazilian movies returns for its 13th edition. The largest Brazilian movie festival of the Midwest, MOSTRA, will kick off on November 2 with Dr. Gama (Doutor Gama), based on the life of Black lawyer who was able to free over 500 slaves in the late 1800s. At the closing event on November 12, the festival will present Executive Order (Medida Provisória), a film about a dystopian near future in Brazil in which an authoritarian government orders all Black citizens to move to Africa.

Both the opening and closing ceremonies, which are fundraising events, will be held at Cervantes Institute. All other screenings are free of charge. The movies will be screened from November 2-12 at universities and cultural centers across Illinois and other venues in Indiana and Wisconsin. Between 12-15 they will be available for virtual screenings. Attendees will have the chance to take part on virtual discussions with filmmakers after some of the screenings.

“We’re always happy to bring to the audiences movies that discuss important social issues, such as racial and gender discrimination, that happen not only in Brazil, but in many parts of the world, including the United States”, said Ariani Friedl, founder and director of MOSTRA.

MOSTRA XIII’s lineup includes “Pedro, between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” (A Viagem de Pedro), “Pixinguinha, an Affectionate Man” (Pixinguinha, Um homem carinhoso), “Rolê – Stories of Brazilian Protests in Malls” (Role, a História dos Rolezinhos), and more.
