Filmmaker born in Recife, Marcelo Gomes had his first encounters with cinema as a participant in a film club. In 2002, he co-wrote the feature film “Madame Satã,” directed by Karim Aïnouz. In 2005, he released his first feature film, “Cinema, Aspirins, and Vultures,” which was selected for the “Un Certain Regard” section of the Cannes Film Festival. In 2012, he directed and wrote “Once Upon a Time Veronica,” a film that won seven awards at the Brasília Film Festival. “The Man of the Crowd” (2013), co-directed with Cao Guimarães, was selected for the “Panorama” section of the Berlin International Film Festival. His most recent fiction film, “Joaquim” (2017), was selected for competition for the Golden Bear at the Berlinale. His documentary “Estou Me Guardando Para Quando o Carnaval Chegar” premiered in theaters in 2019 and received numerous awards, including Best Documentary at the Sesc Best of the Year Festival and Best Documentary and Best Editing at the Brazilian Cinema Grand Prix.
