A film about the attempt to make a film. “Mambembe” revisits footage from 2010 centered on a wandering surveyor and his encounter with three women from a traveling circus. Through the story of these characters, the feature film explores chance while reflecting on the artistic process.

Director and screenwriter Fabio Meira began his film career as an assistant to Ruy Guerra on the movie O Veneno da Madrugada (2004). He directed the award-winning feature films Two Irenes (2017), which premiered at the Berlinale; Aunt Virgínia (2023), winner of six awards at the Gramado Film Festival and nominated for seven and awarded for two Grande Otelo Awards; and Mambembe (2024), which was named Best Film at the Panorama Internacional Coisa de Cinema, FICA, and the Festival de Cinema de Vitória.
MOSTRA is the largest Brazilian film festival in the midwest. The annual event’s motto is “Brazilian Films with Social Conscience,” and it has as its venues many educational and cultural institutions in the greater Chicago area and cities in the midwest. Founded by Ariani Friedl in 2010.
